Where the Body of Christ and Missionaries Connect for Mutual Encouragement, Edification and Community
Putting the Relevant Question to the Test
In 2012, we asked the question:
“If people were given an opportunity to connect with a missionary, would they take it?”
There was only one way of knowing. So, we created the opportunity, then we took it to a large Christian music festival where we had access to thousands of Christians of all ages, and watched to see what would happen. The response was phenomenal!
The opportunity involved little effort. Passersby were asked if they would like to send a note of encouragement to a missionary. From that point they were given a notecard, then they were instructed to pick a country of interest and write something encouraging for a missionary serving there (with the option of requesting that the missionary respond back). When we gathered the cards, we were faced with the most fortunate of problems…we had several hundred more cards than missionaries in our data base.
Will people connect with missionaries, if given the opportunity? Yes, they most definitely will!
Not only did our test show that people are willing to connect, but as we interacted with them, it revealed that people are very interested in missions and genuinely respect and honor missionaries. The challenge that people face, though, is that they don’t know how to connect. That’s another adverse trend in missions that we’re working to overcome.
We’re Doing Something About What We’ve Learned
We know that missionaries long to not be forgotten. We know that people in the church have a genuine desire to relate with missionaries. And we know that both sides have challenges knowing how to connect with one another. So, we’ve created FMNConnect to bring these two vital parts of the Body of Christ together.
